How to repair foam, balsa and fiberglass RC aircraft

Identify the material before choosing glue

Foam, balsa, plywood and fiberglass need different repair methods. Foam may need foam-safe CA, epoxy or foam adhesive. Balsa often repairs well with CA, wood, sanding and reinforcement. Fiberglass may need epoxy and cloth.

The wrong adhesive can melt foam, create brittle joints or add too much weight. When unsure, test on scrap material or ask before applying glue to the model.

Repair structure before cosmetics

A straight wing, solid spar area, secure firewall and reliable control surface matter more than perfect paint. Restore load paths before covering dents or scratches.

Use reinforcement only where it helps. Extra glue, tape or fiberglass can add weight and move CG if applied without planning.

Return-to-flight checks are part of the repair

After repair, check control movement, hinge strength, servo load, motor alignment, battery retention and CG. A repair can change balance or create hidden binding.

Do the next flight conservatively. Use lower rates if appropriate, avoid aggressive maneuvers early and inspect again after landing.

Quality control after a build or repair

A repair that looks neat may not carry load correctly. Verify alignment, material choice, full cure and every affected system.

Dry-fit first

Align and restrain parts before mixing adhesive. Check symmetry, angles, control gaps and load path without cure-time pressure.

Match material and adhesive

Foam, balsa, plywood and fiberglass need different surface preparation and adhesive. Test on scrap when compatibility is uncertain.

Allow a full cure

A joint that feels dry outside can remain weak inside. Do not sand, load or fly before the full product cure time.

Revalidate the model

After work, check CG, throws, direction, free movement, power connections, range and failsafe. Structural work can affect more than one system.

Common questions

Can every crash damage be repaired?

Many models can be repaired, but not every repair is worth flying. Critical structural damage, battery damage or radio damage must be treated seriously.

What glue should I use on foam?

Use foam-safe adhesive unless you know the foam tolerates regular CA or epoxy. Some adhesives can melt foam quickly.

Why recheck CG after repair?

Glue, reinforcement, replacement parts and moved batteries can change balance. CG must be checked before flying again.
