Beginner RC glossary: ESC, Servo, LiPo, CG, Expo and more
A simple glossary for new pilots covering the terms they meet on product pages, manuals and setup conversations.
Electronics terms
ESC is the Electronic Speed Controller that controls an electric motor. Servo is the small actuator that moves a control surface or steering linkage. Receiver is the unit in the model that receives commands from the transmitter.
LiPo is a common rechargeable battery chemistry used in electric RC. BEC is a voltage regulator that can power the receiver and servos from the main battery in many electric setups.
Setup terms
CG means Center of Gravity, the balance point of the aircraft. Expo softens stick response around center. Dual Rate changes maximum control movement. Trim is small radio adjustment used to make the model fly straight.
Binding is the process of linking a receiver to a transmitter. Failsafe defines what the model should do if radio signal is lost.
Flight terms
Stall happens when the wing no longer produces enough lift, usually because angle of attack is too high or airspeed is too low. It is not the same as an engine stopping.
Takeoff, approach and landing become easier when the pilot understands these basic terms before the first flying day.
Decision framework before buying
Four quick checks prevent incomplete purchases, incompatible equipment and a model that advances faster than the pilot.
Budget for the aircraft, radio and receiver, batteries, charger, connectors, tools and first spares. The model price alone is not the cost of entry.
Record cell count, propeller range, servo size, receiver protocol and connector types before ordering. Any unclear item is a reason to pause and verify.
A model that is visible, repairable and easy to land develops skill faster than a fast model that demands reactions the pilot does not yet have.
Available propellers, landing gear, wings and fittings, plus access to an instructor or experienced pilot, matter as much as the specifications.

Common questions
Is stall the same as engine failure?
No. A stall is an aerodynamic condition where the wing loses lift. It can happen even when the motor is running.
What is the difference between expo and dual rate?
Expo changes stick feel around center. Dual Rate changes the maximum travel available on that control.
Why does failsafe matter?
Failsafe can reduce throttle or move controls to a safer state if signal is lost, which helps reduce damage and risk.
